Pam Harland and Angie Miller
Pam Harland has been a librarian for over 25 years working in public libraries, academic libraries, and at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s Research Library. Currently she is the librarian at Sanborn Regional High School, Graduate Teaching Lecturer in the Educational Leadership Department at Plymouth State University, and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of School Librarians. Pam speaks nationally about library spaces, learning commons, librarians as leaders, and everything in between. She is the author of The Learning Commons: Seven Simple Steps to Transforming Your Library (Libraries Unlimited, 2011), co-founder of Let the Librarians Lead, and was NH’s School Librarian of the Year in 2010. Angie Miller, the 2011 New Hampshire Teacher of the Year a TED speaker, is a middle and high school librarian in Meredith, New Hampshire who integrates her thirteen years in the classroom as an English teacher with the mission of a standards-driven library that delivers equity to her students. Angie is a consultant and freelance writer and has written for numerous educational websites and books. As a co-founder of Let the Librarians Lead, she advocates for school librarian leadership and library transformation by working with schools across the country. Wearing three “hats”—former hard-to-help child, teacher, and middle grade author, I will tell a series of stories to shine a light upon how we may help both self-protected children and reluctant students/readers. Teachers will leave with some poignant reminders that they change lives. Every day.
Maryland Teacher Librarian Keynote
Melodi was born and raised in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She is a mother to three children ages 4, 8, and 11. She received an Elementary Education BS from West Chester University and a Technology Integration MA from Walden University. Melodi is beginning her 17th year of teaching and currently serves as a Media Specialist to students in grades Pre-K to 5th grade at Greenwood Elementary in Somerset County. Melodi infuses technology with kinesthetic learning. Her televised announcements highlight student accomplishments, character education, and encourage reading through music videos. Most recently, Melodi led an initiative in her county to partner with NASA to provide a robotics program for summer and migrant students. She serves as Webmaster, Reading Is Fundamental Coordinator, and Technology Committee Leader. She is a Leadership, SIT, Early Childhood Committee member, and serves on State Committees: School Library Media Committee, MDK12 Steering Committee, and Digital Library Consortium. She is also proud to serve on the 2017 Maryland Blue Crab Committee. She conducts professional development online, within schools, and state-wide. She was awarded Teacher of the Year for Somerset County, MD for the 2015-16 school year and at John B. Cary in Hampton, VA in 2003. Advocating for children with rheumatoid arthritis, Melodi has addressed members of Congress. Melodi loves music and has performed in musical productions and sang for special occasions. She is currently a member of the Community Players of Salisbury. Melodi helped to found the Lower Shore Community Performing Arts Company and Theater Academy for children on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
